Franklin Uriah Sherrill was elected First Lieutenant and was with the Company at Norfolk, VA. While at Norfolk he became sick and on the 3rd day of September 1861 he died. The City of Newton, North Carolina was first in Catawba County to organize a United Daughters of the Confederacy chapter.
The Ransom-Sherrill Chapter was named in honor of General Matt Ransom, General Robert Ransom, and Lieutenant Frank Sherrill.
Mrs. Fannie Ransom Williams was the founder and Ransom-Sherrill Chapter's first president.
